Laura Farlam-Williams.
Experienced math & science tutor specializing in high school & university-level subjects.
Ever since I was young, I always wanted to understand how things worked and why things are the way they are. As a child, this meant I asked “Why?” a lot. As an adult, this curiosity led me into science.
To me, people are the most interesting thing in the world. When choosing my university degree, neuroscience was the obvious path for me.
I spent four years studying for a B.Sc. Honours degree in Neuroscience and Mental Health at Carleton University, with dual minors in Biology and Chemistry. I had the privilege of working in the Hayley Lab for three years, where I contributed to research on Parkinson’s disease, stress, and depression. I also spent a summer as part of the Amgen Scholars program, a summer research internship program hosted at University of Toronto. I worked as part of the Lee Lab, analyzing data on the cellular causes of ALS. Both of these work experiences gave me a behind-the-scenes view of how science is really conducted.
I graduated in 2022 with the honour of the University Medal in the Faculty of Science, which is awarded to the student graduating with the highest GPA in the Faculty of Science. After studying the brain and body for 4 years, I have a much better understanding of multiple branches in science, including biology, biochemistry, chemistry, and neuroscience.
Post-graduation, I started working for a non-profit, teaching extracurricular STEM classes to grades 5 - 12. This ignited my passion for sharing science with students, which led me to start this company, Ahead of the Curve Education.
Nothing makes me happier than that “Aha!” moment with students, when a complicated concept clicks and their knowledge of the world expands. My goal at Ahead of the Curve is to ensure that every student, no matter their interests or level of knowledge, finds learning engaging and fun.
